Sign Language on Public Television in Europe 2022

Welcome to the companion website to my doctoral dissertation!

The dissertation (available only in Polish) titled Access to Sign Language Information in Television Programmes of European Public Broadcasters was prepared by my humble self, Sławomir Stępski, under the supervision of Małgorzata Fedorowicz-Kruszewska, Associate Professor at Institute of Information and Communication Research of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Poland.

The dissertation contains data from May 2022 and encompassed 51 sign language user communities in 45 countries, served by 50 public broadcasters.

Methodology (Abbreviated)

Data was gathered from TV schedules, VOD services and TV station monitoring.

The main method used within the dissertation was content analysis.

The unit of analysis was a single television programme, or rather a normalised description of a single television programme.

All sign language TV programme descriptions were described according to a coding scheme that included: weekly duration, day(s) of broadcast, time slot, target age group, disability aspect, genre, sign language source, screen layout, interpreter size.

The unit of observation was a single offer, that is a set of all television programmes broadcast for a single sign language user community.
